Windows are the things that open up the interiors of our buildings to the world outside. There are many variations of windows available based on several different classifications.
One of the ways that different variations of windows are classified is by the method used to open them. This is called the operating type and windows open and class differently depending on the operating type. The proper window for a given room will depend on several factors, but sometimes operating type dictates the choice. In other situations, any one of several choices will be appropriate for a given room.
SLIDER CASEMENT WINDOW
Casement windows have hinges at the sides. Awning windows have the hinges at the top and they open outwards. On the other side, Hopper windows are hinged at the bottom and they open inward. Slider windows are very common. There are double sliders and single sliders. The double sliders have two sashes that slide horizontal and the single slider has just a single sash that also slides horizontal.
Single and double hung windows have sashes that slide vertical. Like sliders, the single hung window has only one sash that slides and the double hung windows have two. The last type is the fixed window. It is not intended to be opened at all. They serve the purpose of decoration only and for visibility to the outside. All of the other variations that do open serve the further purpose of allowing fresh air into the building by opening to the outside. Although often the choice of which different type of window is best for a given situation is a matter of simple preference. In other cases, the size and location of the room will suggest the most appropriate opening type of window for the application.
Today, a large number of windows are available regardless of the operating mode. Different shapes of windows such a bay windows or round windows can replace the common square flat window. Stained glass windows have been making a comeback in some decorating schemes. They were popular in the past, of course, mostly in churches or other religious style buildings.
Windows are available today that offer special insulation properties that help reduce the loss of heat or cooling from the home. Insulated windows would refer to extra protection against the elements and they are usually available in all the different styles of windows. When selecting the proper window for any application, the builder should be aware of the many choices available. The window is such an important part of the overall design of the building and should never be just an afterthought.
