Vinyl Replacement Windows - Styles and Benefits

Adding vinyl replacement windows to your home is one of the smartest and most practical ways to add to the value, curb appeal, and charm of your home. There are many styles to choose from, and the benefits of vinyl replacements are just as endless. Advances in design and improved technology have made these a desirable addition to homes everywhere. Many of today's replacements meet requirements that older wood-frame and metal windows couldn't possibly match.

The frames of today's vinyl replacements are incredibly sound. They are fusion-welded at the corners to form a structurally sound frame. The frames themselves are strong, watertight, and airtight. The frames will never need sealing or painting, as traditional wood ones do. The vinyl frames are extremely durable and will withstand fading and discoloration much better than wood frames. Modern vinyl's have highly effective locking mechanisms incorporated into the frames, providing added security.

Most vinyl windows use double or triple-paned glass. These units create an insulation barrier of air, which provides protection from damaging elements, higher energy-efficiency, and greater sound protection.

As opposed to older-model wood-frame windows, vinyls are not susceptible to humidity and temperature change. Wooden frames will tend to swell and contract due to temperature fluctuations, causing seals to become compromised. This can greatly increase the amount of atmosphere let into the house, as well as let out, causing an increase in energy bills. This will also cause the window to become more difficult to use.

Today's replacement windows are made in a variety of different styles, which allows you to choose a specific type to meet your unique needs.

The most common type we use is called a single-hung. This is the type with two sashes, one over the other, with the bottom sash sliding upward. Double-hung vinyl replacements are a great option to replace these, as both sashes slide up and down. This is useful, as the top sash can be opened, allowing hot air to escape more efficiently.

Sliders are the second most common types. These are the ones where sashes slide side to side. These can come with any number of sashes, most commonly two or three.

Casement and picture windows are also common. Both contain only one sash. Casements can be opened with a crank, and hinge outward. Pictures are stationary, and do not open.

Vinyl replacements are also available as bay or bow. These are basically a combination of windows, which protrude outward, allowing for room for plants or other decorations. Normally found in the front of the house, these windows can provide spectacular beauty.
